Motivational Interviewing (MI): Core Skills Training for Internal Agency Trainers

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a trusted, evidence-based method that has helped individuals navigate behavior change for over 50 years. While MI is conceptually straightforward, true proficiency requires consistent practice, coaching, and ongoing skill development. To ensure long-term success, organizations must establish internal training systems that provide continuous MI education and support—reducing reliance on external trainers and minimizing costs.

Our 3-Part Training System is specifically designed to help agencies build sustainable in-house internal capacity, equipping their teams with the skills needed to independently train and coach staff. By investing in structured, in-house internal MI training, organizations can ensure their workforce retains and refines MI skills acquired - leading to more effective client engagement and lasting impact.

Session Structure & Prerequisites: This training is Session-3 of a 3-part system

  • Previous MI Skills training is required
  • Participants must complete Sessions-1 and 2 of the 3-part system to gain foundational understanding.

Program Overview

This training to develop internal Motivational Interviewing (MI) trainers is the third of the 3-part System for building internal capacity in MI. It is designed to equip internal agency trainers with the essential skills needed to teach and coach MI effectively. While becoming proficient as a MI trainer presents unique challenges, it can be a rewarding and career-enhancing opportunity as well.

Organizations that develop internal MI trainers benefit from ongoing, sustainable training for both existing and new staff—eliminating the need to rely on external trainers. By building internal expertise, agencies can ensure continuous skill development and long-term success.

Training Objectives & Outcomes

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Teach MI Fundamentals – Gain essential knowledge for training others in MI techniques.
  • Coach MI Application – Guide staff in applying MI skills effectively in practice.
  • Implement Learned Skills – Apply MI training strategies within their own professional settings.
  • Develop Training Materials – Create activities, curricula, and presentations tailored to agency needs.

Training Approach

This program introduces MI Train-the-Trainer concepts, providing a structured pathway for internal trainers to develop proficiency. Follow-up sessions are recommended to reinforce learning, allowing participants to address challenges they may encounter, and refine techniques.

This best-practice approach ensures trainers gain confidence and effectiveness in delivering MI training within their agencies.

Who Should Attend?

This program is ideal for:

  • Internal training personnel responsible for staff development.
  • Professionals preparing to become MI trainers within their organizations.

“I liked that the information was tactical, action-oriented, and given from the perspective of organizational development. I liked that we were provided with specific tools (questionnaires and assessments) to utilize with our agencies. I am in strong agreement that we need to focus on internal processes and on staff outcomes as part of an evidence-based approach and I think it's great that the workshop highlighted this throughout “
