DAY - 1

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

8:30-4:30: Strategies and Tactics for Preventing and Reducing Youth Delinquency & Crime

Research has tried to determine how youth delinquency and crime begin and how it progresses. Many factors can add to a youth’s risk for engaging delinquency and crime. Risk factors can increase a youth’s chances for delinquency and crime, while protective factors can reduce the risk.  Risk and protective factors can affect youth at different stages of their lives. At each stage, risks occur that can be changed through evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies.  Research-based prevention programs focus on intervening early in a child’s development to strengthen protective factors before problem behaviors develop.

Program Goals and Learning Outcomes

During this day long workshop, participants will learn how risks can be changed or prevented with individual, peer, family, school, and community interventions that focus on helping youth develop appropriate, positive behaviors.  Participants will also learn strategies and tactics for addressing youth delinquency and crime through proven prevention and reduction approaches.

Dr. Elam will review key components essential for effective programs for engaging youth and adolescents to prevent and reduce delinquency and crime.

At the end of this workshop, participants will have the conceptual knowledge to design and implement an effective delinquency prevention program.

Key topics that will be discussed include:

•    Establishing a Continuum of Care for youth
•    Developing primary, secondary and tertiary interventions
•    Identifying signs and risks that may lead to crime and delinquency
•    Implementing programs that target youth’s ecological domains

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:

•    Understand the types of situations that are conducive to delinquency
•    Identify situational features that increase the likelihood for delinquency
•    List individual traits that increase the likelihood of delinquency
•    Explain how the family plays a central role in delinquency
•    Explain the association between school experiences and delinquency
•    Recognize the impact of delinquent peers on delinquency
•    Describe efforts that have been successful in preventing and reducing crime

DAY-2

Thursday, May 17, 2012

8:30-4:30: Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Programs and Practices, Selection and Implementation

"Preventing and addressing youth delinquency and crime”, says Dr. Peter Greenwood, Executive Director, Advancing Evidence Based Practice, “not only saves young lives from being wasted, but also prevents the onset of adult criminal careers and thus reduces the burden of crime on its victims and on society.”

In the process of selecting Evidenced Based Programs for use in offender rehabilitation there are two basic questions to ask;  1) How do I know if the EBP was developed from a credible empirical process?  2) Is it the right one for the population I am working with?

The workshop will help participants understand specific programs, the promise they hold, what works or what does not.  Participants will learn to determine which programs will be best suited for addressing their agency needs and individual local situations.  Finally they will learn to integrate what is learned into their existing situations.

Mr. Lowis will walk through the processes necessary to evaluate an EBP and to assist in selection, implementation, and strengthening programs selected.  Participants will be helped to increase their knowledge of Evidence Based Practices based on solid criteria for their evaluation.  This knowledge will useful to the participant in a wide range of activities necessary to evaluate programs, approaches and developmental activities and measure implementation through outcomes.  Some program topics will include:

  • Family integrated models
  • Aggression replacement therapy
  • Sex offender
  • Life skills education
  • Multidimensional programs
  • Teen courts
  • Intensive supervision
  • Strategy of programs of aggression replacement

DAY-3

Friday May 18, 2012

8:30-12:00: Integrating Evidence-based & Strength-centered Approaches for Effective Case Management

“The (practitioner) is the intervention!”  Dean Fixen

Evidence from meta-analysis of evidenced based and promising practices demonstrates that without a solid collaborative and assistive relationship, outcomes are reduced across all methods.  Evidenced Based Programs and Promising Practices all are adversely affected with regard to outcomes if the practitioner lacks advanced skills for joining and engaging.  Thus the mere selection of an evidence based practice is less of a guarantee of achieving the outcomes it was designed to produce without primary focus on mutuality of the collaborative partnership.  Use of Strength-based, Recovery-oriented and Stage-matching Interventions in the design of an approach to rehabilitation within any Evidence Based Practices is the key for connecting practice to outcome.

Learn the simple approaches taught by Mark Lowis, MSW, LMSW, MINT for designing and integrating Strength-based strategies from client levels of readiness for moving toward recovery of critical life functions within the framework of any Evidence Based Practice as well as state and federal mandates.  Effective case management is a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation, and advocacy for options and services to meet clients' individual needs - efficiently.

In this program presented by Mark Lowis, LMSW, MINT, President, MML Consulting, Inc. we will learn evidence-based practices for this specialty area in human services and how it is applied in various settings.

What we will cover

Participants will learn how evidence-based practices that promote quality and effective interventions linking individuals to appropriate resources they need to ultimately succeed at their goals.  They will;

  • Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive-behavioral Skills
  • Stages of Change
  • Gain knowledge on the key characteristics of case management
  • Learn how to gather data to work effectively with clients and provide accountability reporting
  • Gain an understanding of how to motivate clients for change
  • Be in a position to understand recent state and national requirements
  • Learn to select and implement services as well as monitor progress, and
  • This training provides editable tools and resources to assist in the designing of strength-based, stage-matched interventions for recovery orientation.
1:15-3:00: Goals and Implementation Action Planning

A highlight of Joyfields Institute programs is you depart with a draft action plan they can put into action upon their return home.  Throughout the program participants are encouraged to set goals and draft their implementation action plans with help from faculty onsite.  In many cases, attendees come as teams.  In that case they work on their plan together.  This way they have a draft implementation action plan they all worked together to develop.

We supply an excellent work planning tool for your use.  This tool is very useful for any project planning effort and it insures that your program is implemented while engaging stakeholders in a collaborative non-threatening way.
