On Day-1 we begin with a full day workshop with Dr. Paul Elam reviewing a high-level perspective on key strategies and tactics for effectively preventing and reducing delinquency and crime among youth and adolescents.  In the workshop he will work with us to understand key components essential for effective programs that are based on evidence-based practices and strategies for engaging youth and adolescents to prevent and reduce delinquency and crime.

On Day-2 we will spend some time on the "business" of working with youth and the human services field that is so often lost as we bury ourselves in our work!  We will work with renowned author and expert, Dr. Peter Greenwood on specific Evidence-based Programs and the promise they hold. Participants will learn to determine which programs best address their individual local situations, whether to purchase another program or adapt theirs into an EBP.  Finally they will learn to successfuly integrate what is learned into their existing situations, obstacles to anticipate and how to go about dealing with them.

Finally on Day-3 Mark Lowis, MSW, LMSW, MINT works with us on strength-based practices.  In particular he will review how these approaches factor and are integrated into working with clients in our care.

We then wrap with a hands-on effort to develop a draft Action Plan you can put to work upon your return to the office using what is learned.  Experts will be on hand to assist with development of your plan

The faculty is exemplary featuring experts to help us focus on what works and avoid costly experiments!  Bring your team along and spread out to cover all bases.

Day 1 - Full Day Workshop

Strategies & Tactics for Preventing and Reducing Youth Delinquency & Crime
Paul Elam, Ph.D., Director of Business Innovation and Project Manager, Public Policy Associates, Inc.

Research has tried to determine how youth delinquency and crime begin and how it progresses. Many factors can add to a youth’s risk for engaging delinquency and crime. Risk factors can increase a youth’s chances for delinquency and crime, while protective factors can reduce the risk.  Risk and protective factors can affect youth at different stages of their lives. At each stage, risks occur that can be changed through evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies.  Research-based prevention programs focus on intervening early in a child’s development to strengthen protective factors before problem behaviors develop.

Workshop Goals and Learning Outcomes

During this day long workshop, participants will learn how risks can be changed or prevented with individual, peer, family, school, and community interventions that focus on helping youth develop appropriate, positive behaviors.  Participants will also learn strategies and tactics for addressing youth delinquency and crime through proven prevention and reduction approaches.   Dr. Elam will review key components essential for effective programs for engaging youth and adolescents to prevent and reduce delinquency and crime.

At the end of this workshop, participants will have the conceptual knowledge to design and implement an effective delinquency prevention program.  Key topics that will be discussed include:

•    Establishing a Continuum of Care for youth
•    Developing primary, secondary and tertiary interventions
•    Identifying signs and risks that may lead to crime and delinquency
•    Implementing programs that target youth’s ecological domains

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will also:

•    Understand the types of situations that are conducive to delinquency
•    Identify situational features that increase the likelihood for delinquency
•    List individual traits that increase the likelihood of delinquency
•    Explain how the family plays a central role in delinquency
•    Explain the association between school experiences and delinquency
•    Recognize the impact of delinquent peers on delinquency
•    Describe efforts that have been successful in preventing and reducing crime

Days 2 - Full Day Workshop

Implementing Evidence-based Programs and Practices: Transitioning Your Program Into An EBP
Dr. Peter Greenwood, Executive Director, Association for Advancement of Evidence Based Practice

“Preventing and addressing youth delinquency and crime”, says Dr. Peter Greenwood, Executive Director, Association for Advancing Evidence Based Practice, “not only saves young lives from being wasted, but also prevents the onset of adult criminal careers and thus reduces the burden of crime on its victims and on society.”

Finally, we are taking the mystery out of determining what constitutes an evidence-based program.  Should I invest in such a program and ditch my existing program?  Or instead get my program adapted into and approved as an evidence-based program?  Participants will be in a position to come away equipped to answer these questions.  They will also come away know how to successfully do either.

Dr. Greenwood will review evidence-based programs for various settings, the merits of adopting an existing program vs building your existing one into an evidence-based program with focus spent on specific programs based on attendee pre-program feedback.  Finally they will learn to integrate what is learned expediently upon return.

The workshop will help participants understand specific programs, the promise they hold, what works or what does not.  Participants will learn to determine which programs will be best suited for addressing their agency needs and individual local situations.
