EVIDENCE-BASED & STRENGTH-CENTERED
TRAININGS AND CONSULTATION FOR MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER AND
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SETTINGS Basic & Booster -
Can be one or two days depending on the objective of the agency (knowledge
transfer or some ability for trainees to begin practice. This can also be presented in smaller
increments as long as the training objective is an introduction without a lot
of expectation on competency of practitioners. Advanced – Can be
two or more days depending on the extent of competency expected by the agency
for its practitioners. Advanced is truly
intended to give depth to the practitioner’s knowledge of the way motivation
and counselor style effect change and provide them with a high level of skill
with the method. Train Trainers – This training is intended to prepare internal staff members of an agency to provide ongoing training activities to enable staff to maintain and advance their skills. These staff must have received training at the basic and advanced level and be able to demonstrate high competency in practice as well as possess knowledge and skills as a trainer. Motivational
Interviewing (MI) Coding and Feedback for Audio Tape Practice – MI is not
learned in training. Evidence suggests
that MI is learned through training combined with coaching and feedback from
practice. Coaching – This is intended to provide opportunities for practitioners and teams to present proposed trainings, proposed presentation materials, team cases, etc. for consultation and is intended to maintain effective trainings, interventions, and approaches based on strength based strategies and motivational interventions for recovery. Clinical Supervision of trainers and practitioners
– This service is similar to coaching with the exception that the focus in on
skills in clinical work on specific cases as well as fidelity of what is
contained in training. Typically, teams
identify the three most difficult cases they are dealing with and present them
to me. We use a systematic method of
helping them to analyze the case, determine the focus the team has, determine
the targeted issues for the person, identify their level of readiness (staging)
to work on the goal for that issue, and design stage matched objectives for each
goal followed by motivational interventions to assist with the objectives. At the end they team compares the current
plan with the one we developed to better understand the typical plan when
compared to the stage-matched plan. MI in Group Practice – Trains people on the use of Motivational Interviewing in group facilitation Probation and Parole
– Training on Strength Based Strategies and Motivational Interviewing in the
correctional system as well as in assisting in the successful completion of
probation and Parole Medical Issues – Focuses on Strength Based Strategies and Motivational Interviewing for change issues that are encountered as a result of medical conditions (taking medication, diet, exercise, therapy, etc.). Family – Focuses
on how use of stage-wise treatment, strength based strategies, and motivational
interventions are used with families and supports in care of individuals. Developmental Disabilities – Focuses on the way in which stage-wise treatment, strength-based strategies and motivational interventions are used with families in the care of individuals with developmental disabilities Trauma Informed Care
Program Services and Implementation - Trauma-informed organizations,
programs, and services are based on an understanding of the vulnerabilities or
triggers of trauma survivors that traditional service delivery approaches may
exacerbate, so that services and programs can be more supportive and avoid
re-traumatizing survivors. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) – Focuses on dealing with the issues around anxiety disorder brought on by major trauma from various events such as war, imprisonment, assault, sexual abuse or natural disasters. Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy - A cognitive-behavioral approach is the primary
foundational model for facilitating change. This program is designed to
support the work of correctional change and reform of populations under various
forms of supervision. The course will take individual looks at Behavioral
and Cognitive components as well as review the merger of the two. Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Techniques for Enhancing Performance (MIA: STEP): This is manualized training that accomplishes to objectives. 1-assisting assessment staff in the use of MI during any type of assessment in order to accomplish engagement, retention, and commitment to treatment, and 2-teaches supervisors of persons using MI a method to increase their MI skills using an easy coding system with a supervisory approach. Strength-centered
Strategies: Basic and Advanced – Focuses on various theories considered to
be strength-based in their approach to therapy.
Participants learn various theories that demonstrate the way in which
people are influenced to make decisions about themselves and their behaviors. Participants become hypersensitive to any
approach that can be characterized as “deficit-based” and learn specific
strength-based alternatives. Basic is
one day and Advanced is the addition of a second day in order to involve skills
training (MI, Solution Focused, MI/CBT combined, support, etc.). Motivational
Interviewing and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Combined Technique - This is
a formal training to teach skills for combining the two methods. Clinical trials demonstrate that CBT combined
with MI is four times more effective. Writing Recovery
Oriented Treatment Plans using Stage-Wise Treatment and Strength-Based
Approaches – This training is extremely useful for both mental health and
substance use disorders treatment and especially for co-morbidity. It takes the clinician from assessment
through person centered planning to the IPOS.
It involves identifying targeted issues Substance Abuse Treatment – All inclusive training adaptable to specific agency needs. Recovery Orientation Matrix Group Family SA Counseling Techniques/Interventions Group Therapy – This is an advanced training on group practice and is usually done in one or two days although any part of it can be presented in a smaller time frame. Types of Groups Preparing Clients Facilitator requirements Interventions/Facilitation for stages of group process Stage-Wise Groups Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use disorders (Complex Care) – We have developed several training presentations on this but now use the SAMHSA Manualized Presentations. Sometimes it is necessary to expand the detail on a part of this training which we are able to do. CCISC Work Plan Development – We have a process that is very streamlined and really helpful to agencies that struggle with developing and updating a work plan while also having to develop meeting agendas and transcribe minutes for activities around this initiative. It works well for any implementation project. Case Management Practices For Effective Outcomes - Participants learn evidence-based & strength-centered case management practices. Participants will be able to differentiate traditional deficit-centered practices vs. evidence-based and strength-centered practices we are moving toward. Using relevant examples, participants will learn how they can help their clients achieve desirable outcomes through promoting quality and effective interventions which link individuals to appropriate resources. Clinical Supervision
Practices to Enhance Performance and Improve Client Outcomes - Promote the
professional development of the supervisee by building on their existing
strengths and talents. Supervisors
provide evaluative feedback to assist with new learning through instruction and
modeling. Primary tasks of supervision
include enhancing competence, continuing the life-long learning process and
helping to develop effective self-assessment skills. Employee Management Skills- Basic human relationship skills for working with staff including peers, bosses and their own direct-reports is taught with a goal to enhance business results. Skills for new or less tenured as well as more tenured managers and supervisors are available. CONSULTATION Program Evaluation – Developing and utilizing performance measures to assess key results; developing and utilizing action plans; monitoring implementation through process evaluation. Using performance assessment to improve agency operations, manage resistance to change, and communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
