Trinidad - 500 more prison beds coming

Trinidad & Tobago's Newsday

THE GOVERNMENT will increase the capacity of prisons in order to support the expected influx of prisoners kept on remand due to the proposed Bail Amendment Act, Minister in the Ministry of National Security Donna Cox said Friday.

Giving her maiden Parliamentary contribution during the debate on the Bail Amendment Bill, Cox addressed concerns which had been expressed about the legislation which proposes a widening of the net of non-bailable offences.

Desmond Allum SC, the President of the Criminal Bar Association on Thursday argued that the new bill will simply serve to overcrowd prisons.

But on Friday, Cox announced that the Prisons Service is set to expand, with 500 more beds to be provided at the remand section of the Golden Grove Prison.
