New program reintegrating sex offenders
into their communities
The year-long program, which is being run by the Central Australian
Aboriginal Congress, provides support services to community members,
as well as sex offenders on parole or community-based orders.
The program's coordinator, Malcolm Frost, says the initiative came
about after similar programs with offenders in jail were successful.
He says it will help community members deal with an offender, as
well as reducing the risk of them reoffending.
"It gives the community some preparations, some time, to work out
amongst themselves, with me, to put in strategies to work with this
guy and his problems," he said.
"It also means the community can apply a level of supervision to the
guy to monitor his behaviour, to watch out for risk factors, just to
provide an extra layer of supervision."
